Octocon’s Vision and Values

Octocon, the National Irish Science Fiction Convention, is a celebration of our favourite stories from books, comics, TV, films and games; from science fiction, fantasy, horror and beyond; attracting artists, writers, film-makers and fans from across the human sphere of influence.

As a convention, we aim:

  • To engage with and promote the community of science fiction, fantasy and horror (SFFH) fans and creatives in Ireland.
  • To promote Irish SFFH outside of Ireland.
  • To provide a space for the SFFH community both in-person and online.
  • To help grow the SFFH community through events and activities.
  • To create and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive space for Octocon members.
  • To ensure meaningful representation throughout Octocon.

Organisational Structure

Octocon is managed and organised by a committee led by a chair. The other principal officers are treasurer and membership secretary, with other committee roles as deemed necessary for the successful running of the convention.

We also welcome additional volunteers throughout the year and during the convention weekend.

Voting rights are held only by committee members although decisions that significantly affect the operation of Octocon will be open for consultation.

Octocon’s Commitment to Its Members

We will run a convention every October, to be held at a location in Ireland and also online.

Octocon will hold an Annual General Meeting every year, open to all members.

We will hold events and activities throughout the year, including Octocon Presents talks and workshops held online.

Regular email newsletters will be sent to our members and other subscribers with information about plans for the convention and other Octocon events.

We will provide an online community space where members can stay in touch with each other, and learn about and take part in Octocon online events.

We endeavour to make Octocon a safe and welcoming space for all our members, and to ensure meaningful representation throughout Octocon.

Your Role as a Member of Octocon

Your membership of Octocon runs from the date of purchase until the end of the year in which the Octocon you purchased membership for is held. All members are able to attend the AGM and join our community space; attending members (both in-person and online) are able to attend events and activities throughout the year of their membership, and will be able to view items recorded in the year of their membership and during the following year as well.

We encourage you to become involved in the ongoing operations of Octocon, in whatever way works for you; for example, by attending the convention and other events and activities, by volunteering, or by promoting Octocon.

We hope you will engage with our staff and other members through our:

  • communications such as our newsletters and social media
  • events and activities including the annual convention
  • meetings such as our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
  • consultation and feedback surveys

We encourage you to share your feedback, good and bad, to help us to make Octocon better for everyone.

We ask you to respect our decision-making processes and the results of committee votes.

We expect all members to continue to help us make Octocon a safe and welcoming space for all our members by abiding by our Code of Conduct and other relevant policies. These can be found on our website (Policies and Statements).
